Brom and Eragon set out to search for and kill the Ra'zac, the beings responsible for killing Garrow. Brom teaches Eragon the magical knowledge from the secret elven language that will make Eragon and Saphira together very powerful.

Yonkoma manga (4コマ漫画, 'four cell manga' or 4-koma for short), a comic strip format, generally consists of gag comic strips within four panels of equal size ordered from top to bottom. They also sometimes run right-to-left horizontally or use a hybrid 2×2 style, depending on the layout requirements of the publication in which they appear. Although the word yonkoma comes from Japanese, the style also exists outside Japan in other Asian countries as well as in the English-speaking market (particularly in mid-20th century United States strips, where Peanuts popularized the format;^[1] most strips there, including the last several years of Peanuts, have since moved to a three-panel format).

Origin[edit]

Rakuten Kitazawa (who wrote under the name Yasuji Kitazawa) produced the first yonkoma in 1902. Entitled Jiji Manga, it was thought to have been influenced by the works of Frank Arthur Nankivell and of Frederick Burr Opper.^[2]

Structure[edit]

4koma Manga

Traditionally, yonkoma follow a structure known as kishōtenketsu. This word is a compound formed from the following Japanese kanji characters:

Ki (起): The first panel forms the basis of the story; it sets the scene.
Shō (承): The second panel develops upon the foundation of the story laid down in the first panel.
Ten (転): The third panel is the climax, in which an unforeseen development occurs.
Ketsu (結): The fourth panel is the conclusion, in which the effects of the third panel are seen.^[2]

Uses[edit]

These comic strips appear in almost all types of publications in Japan, including manga magazines, graphic novels, the comics section of newspapers, game magazines, cooking magazines, and so forth. The plot often ends within the four panels; although some serial development may pass on to future installments, creating a more continuous story. Some yonkoma also tackle serious topics, though most do so with humor. Some manga occasionally use yonkoma, usually at the end of a chapter or bound volume, as a non-canon joke to complement the story.

In Muslim North Africa and Buddhism China, this era witnesses the rise of a new dynasty (the Qing, 1644-1912) and the continued fracturing of African governments.

Throughout this period, artists continued to turn to religion for inspiration. Still, by this period, all three religions were well-established, and had well-established subject matters, styles, and symbolic languages.

Our task is understand how artists reflected the religious and non-religious themes of the day.

Before I lay out your project, let's cover one more concept that is central to understanding religion and the art of religion: orthodoxy and heterodoxy. To be orthodox in a religion means a believer concludes
there is only one correct way to practice that religion. To the orthodox (an all three religions have orthodox practitioners) any deviation from that one correct way is blasphemy and equally bad as non-believers
actions. For example, an orthodox Muslim might believe that his way of washing feet before prayer is the only way and all other ways are as bad as polytheism.
The term 'orthodox' may be confusing as we often associate it with particular sect of Christianity. And Orthodox Christians are more strict in their interpretation of the Christian message. Nonetheless, orthodox
(small 'o') refers only to those who are rigid in their faith. Those who believe there are multiple ways to practice a faith are known as heterodox believers. For example, a Buddhist who says 'I meditate four times
a day, but my neighbor only prays twice, and that's ok' displays a heterodox religious behavior.
Briefly: orthodox = strict interpretation of a faith
heterodox = diverse interpretations of a faith.
Religious art reflects this clash between the orthodox and heterodox. In fact, some of fiercest religious fights of this period are between practitioners of the same religion, not between practitioners of
different religions. For example, the Sufi and Shia and Protestants and Catholics fought far more against their co-religious than against other religions.

Your project is to chose two images from one of the websites we discussed last week and write about those two images.

Tasks

First: Chose two religious images based on the following criteria

Original artwork is from the period 1650-1750 C.E. and has a creation date that is accurate to within a decade.
Artwork should be housed at a credible cultural institution and the image of the artwork should be hosted on a credible website.
Your two images must be from different religions from different parts of the world (For the purposes of this assignment we'll assume Turkey is not part of Europe).
Your two images must have explicit religious content.

Second: Answer the following questions in complete sentences for both images. Most questions will require a short paragraph but no question requires more than one paragraph.

What does your image tell us about the material past? (the material past is the stuff of history- shoes, clothes, food, transportation, books, etc).
Is your image more of an orthodox or heterodox religious art piece?
Why do you conclude that?
Does your image address other religions or just its own? Why does that matter for understanding the history of religion in the region of the image?
What historical trend/event/person/idea or technology is most evident in your image?
In one sentence, what is the historical significance of this piece?

Air Rage

(A) The first recorded case of an airline passenger turning seriously violent during a flight, a phenomenon now widely known as “air rage”, happened in 1947 on a flight from Havana to Miami. A drunk man assaulted another passenger and bit a flight attendant. However, the man escaped punishment because it was not then clear under whose legal control a crime committed on plane was, the country where the plane was registered or the country where the crime was committed. In 1963, at the Tokyo convention, it was decided that the laws of the country where the plane is registered take precedence.
(B) The frequency of air rage has expanded out of proportion to the growth of air travel. Until recently few statistics were gathered about air rage, but those that have been indicated that passengers are increasingly likely to cause trouble or engage in violent acts. For example, in 1998 there were 266 air rage incidents out of approximately four million passengers, a 400% increase from 1995. In the same period, American Airlines showed a 200% rise. Air travel is predicted to rise by 5% internationally by 2010 leading to increased airport congestion. This, coupled with the flying public’s increased aggression, means that air rage may become a major issue in coming years.
(C) Aside from discomfort and disruption, air rage poses some very real dangers to flying. The most extreme of these is when out of control passengers enter the cockpit. This has actually happened on a number of occasions, the worst of which have resulted in the death and injury of pilots or the intruder taking control of the plane, almost resulting in crashes. In addition, berserk passengers sometimes attempt to open the emergency doors while in flight, putting the whole aircraft in danger. These are extreme examples and cases of air rage more commonly result in physical assaults on fellow passengers and crew such as throwing objects, punching, stabbing or scalding with hot coffee.
(D) The causes of air rage are not known for certain, but it is generally thought that factors include: passenger behavior and personality, the physical environment and changes in society. A recent study has identified the issues that start the incidents to be as follows.

Food 5%

(E) One of the major causes seems to be the passenger’s behavior or their personality. Fear of flying and the feeling of powerlessness associated with flying can lead to irritable or aggressive passengers. Also, alcohol consumed on a plane pressurized to 8000ft affects the drinker more quickly and the effects are stronger. Many people do not take account of this and drinking may increase any negative reaction to the flying environment they have, which, combined with the lowering of their inhibitions, may cause air rage. Smoking withdrawal, which some liken in severity to opiate withdrawal, is another major cause of air rage incidents. Passengers caught smoking in the toilets occasionally assault flight attendants and have been known to start fires. When conflicts occur in these conditions, they can escalate into major incidents if the passenger has a violent personality or a fear of flying and because of the enclosed nature of a plane offers no option of retreat as would be natural in a “fight or flight” reaction.
(F) Some people feel that the physical environment of a plane can lead to air rage. Seats on most airlines have become smaller in recent years as airlines try to increase profits. This leads to uncomfortable and irritated passengers. Also, space for carry on luggage is often very small. Because up to 8% of checked-in luggage is lost, misdirected or stolen, passengers have been trying to fit larger carry on items into these small storage areas and this can lead to disputes that can escalate into air rage. Airlines could also be to blame by raising passengers’ expectations too high with their marketing and advertising. Many air rage incidents start when disappointed passengers demand to be reseated. Finally, there is some evidence to show that low oxygen levels can raise aggression level and make people feel more desperate. Airlines have lowered oxygen levels to save money. Now the level of oxygen in the air that the pilots breathe is ten times higher than in cabin class.
(G) Another reason that has been suggested is that society is getting ruder and less patient. The increased congestion at airports, longer queues and increased delays have only added to this. In addition, some air rage incidents have been linked to the demanding nature of high achieving business people, who do not like people telling them what to do and resent the power that the cabin staff have over them. For them, a flight attendant is a waiter or waitress who should do what the passenger wants.
(H) The strongest calls for action to control air rage have come from pilots and aircrew. The International Transport Workers’ Federation argues that there are too many loopholes that let people escape punishment and that the penalties are too light. They want to notify all passengers of the penalties for air rage before taking off, rather than after the passenger begins to cause serious problems, when it may be too late. The Civil Aviation Organisation has been organizing international cooperation and penalties have increased in recent years. The most severe punishment so far has been a 51-month jail sentence, a fine to pay for the jet fuel used and 200 hours community service for a man who attempted to enter the cockpit and to open the emergency door of a domestic US flight.
(I) Various other measures are being used to control air rage. Aircrews are getting training on how to calm passengers and how to predict where incidents might result in air rage and take action to prevent this. Other measures include strengthening doors to stop people entering the cockpit, training crew in the use of plastic restraints to tie down unruly passengers and having pilots divert their planes if passengers cause problems. Banning passengers who are guilty of air rage from flying has also been tried to a lesser extent.

One of the most useful aids for solving a statics problem is the free bodydiagram (FBD). A free body diagram is a graphic, dematerialized, symbolicrepresentation of the body (structure, element or segment of an element)in which all connecting 'pieces' have been removed. A FBD is aconvenient method to model the structure, structural element, or segmentthat is under scrutiny. It is a way in which to conceptualize the structure,and its composite elements, so that an analysis may be initialized.
All of the physical attrributes of the structure are removed. This is notcompleted at random, rather with a distinct method. A body, or segment thereof,is represented by a simple single line. Each connection is solely representedby a juncture with distinct properties, or is replaced by a set of forcesand moments which would represent the action at that connection. Internalforces which would be found at a node (connection or joint) can be replacedby representational external forces where that 'part' connectswould connect with the other member in the FBD. All loads are representedas force systems.

The image to the right is a link to a movie which illustrates the way inwhich each of the loads on the structure (in this case the bench) are resolved.It also illustrates how each and every physical load that acts upon thestructure must be represented. This means that all of the loads are replacedby vectors. Even the supports are replaced by single vectors.
Notice how the person, cans and upper shelf dematerialize and are replacedby vectors. The FBD at the end of the movie is not complete. What is missing?
Everything that is needed to solve a force system is includedon the FBD. Free body diagrams may not seem necessary in the relativelysimple current applications, but as problems become more complex, theirusefulness increases.

The following is the process for determining the reaction at the wall fora cantilever beam. A FBD is first drawn of the beam. Next, cut the beamfree from the wall and replace the wall with the forces that were supportingthe beam at the wall before it was cut free. These forces are unknown, butthey are the only forces that can keep the beam in equilibrium. They areidentical to the internal forces in the beam at that point before it wascut. The internal forces in the beam before it was cut free from its supportare also determined when the forces which will keep, or put, the FBD inequilibrium are found.

A fixed support will resist translation in all directionsand rotation (moment). The FBD must show all of these directions. The principlesof equilibrium can always be used to solve a FBD. In the FBD above Sum Fy = 2K and Sum Fx = 0. The 2K forces(load and vertical reaction force) cause a counter-clockwise couple of 10K-FT which must be resisted by a moment on the end of the cut section of10 K-FT acting in a clockwise direction.

This is an illustration of three different structural systems which haveone 100 pound load and one 150 pound load acting on them at exactly thesame point. They are also supported with a roller support at the left andpinned support at the right. Each one could be a structure made of any typeof material...wood, steel, bamboo, or perhaps paper.

This is a Free Body Diagram of these three systems which has been drawnto represent the force system. Note how all of the internal structure hasbeen removed from this representation. The internal arrangement does notmatter for the determination of the supporting reactions! AND, if the supportingand loading geometries are the same, the external reactions will alswaysremain the same.

The Umbrian Street Lamp
This is a street lamp that is commonly found in Umbria, Italy. It lookslike many lamps found all over the world. The three photos illustrate howthe free body diagram for this structure should be conceived. The firststep is to dematerialize the lamp. Identify the center of the body and drawthis as a straght line. The only identifieable weight is the lamp, so thisis drawn as a vector as indicated. The next step is to determine what isrequired at the other end of the lamp to maintain equilibrium; what is neededto keep the lamp from spinning off into space? These forces (including themoment) are drawn as indicated. What is missing from this illustration?The magnitudes of the moment and force at the left side should be includedin a complete free body diagram.
The Verona Column
There are many situations in which the exact conditions of the end restraintsare not able to be determined in the first glance. The materiality and relativestiffness of the elements which are being supported/connected provide cluesas to the actual behavior.
This is a thin brick column supporting a wooden canopy at the old castlein Verona, Italy. How is this element connected to the wall below?

The Harbor Crane
When confronted with what appears to be a complex prolblem, the first thingto do is to SIMPLIFY!!! Determine the identifiable pieces. Look for significantchanges in the structural morphology. Turn the image upside down if needbe in order to attempt to dematerialze the problem.
In this case, the crane must be divided into at least two recognizable pieces.It has a trussed upper structure (A) and a rigid frame lower structure (B).We can split the structures into these two parts because we can also recognizethat the upper part must be able to rotate while the lower part remains'stable' or at the very least remains in place. Two significantweights, or forces, can be identified acting on part A; the weight of thehoisted load and the large concrete block counter-balance. Notice the relativemagnitudes of the force vectors. If the actual magnitude of forces are unknown, this is one way in which these values can be represented.
Note also that some parts of the actual built form of the crane have been neglected in the upper part. There is a series of machines which occupy the platform above the circular swivel track. These are not really of concern in this anaysis unless they are permanent AND of considerable weight. If they are NOT considered, then their location at the center of the whole crane adds a bit of stability to the overall system. Thus, smaller items which might ormight not be present are usually neglected.
Part B consists of a heavy, solid plate steel rigid frame. It seems to have feet at the bottom of each 'leg' that provide the 'footing.' The free body diagram is drawn passing through the center of gravity of the section. There are times when the location of the center of gravity is actualy unknown. When this is the case, then it is necessary to make a 'best guess' as to its location. Once this is completed, it can be tested asto its 'correctness' by the logic of the resulting diagram. There are times when the Free body diagram does not seem to represent anything close to the built form.
